The Bharatiya Janata Party has greeted the 1.25 crore population of Uttarakhand on one year of the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the State, stating the purpose of this historic initiative is to provide uniform legal protection to all residents of the State, which was also a major electoral offer of the party.
The BJP State president and Rajya Sabha member Mahendra Bhatt said that the UCC was part of the party’s aims since its formation. “Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ensured that the 1.25 crore people of Uttarakhand get uniform protection under the law. The number of marriage registrations increased 200-folds after this law came into force. On the other hand, we have been successful in ensuring an almost cent per cent check on the Teen Talaq and Halala in the Muslim community. The UCC has taken the concept of women empowerment to new heights in the State,” Bhatt said.
The BJP State president said that the UCC has facilitated the same treatment to all citizens irrespective of religion in cases related to marriage, divorce and inheritance. “The legal bias on the basis of religion and complications have been done away with following the implementation of the UCC. At the same time, the implementation of the UCC is according to the ideas of BR Ambedkar,” Bhatt said.
Questioning the statements of the opposition, the BJP State president said that a year after the implementation of the UCC, it has become clear that lies were spread about the registration of live-in relationships. Bhatt claimed that the completion of one year of the UCC’s implementation in Uttarakhand is a new achievement which has taken a historic form.
