UPCL cuts power purchase costs, saves Rs 160 crore in 9 months

The Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) has claimed to have made substantial savings in electricity procurement during the first nine months of the financial year 2025–26, reducing its expenditure by about Rs 160 crore through improved buying strategies.

The UPCL managing director Anil Kumar said that the utility avoided higher-priced purchases on conventional day-ahead platforms, where rates were around Rs 5.50 per unit. Instead, UPCL sourced a significant portion of its power through energy exchanges at a much lower average price of Rs 3.59 per unit, leading to notable cost efficiencies.

In addition to lowering procurement expenses, the corporation also strengthened its revenue position. By trading Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), UPCL earned an extra Rs 125 crore during the same period. The combined impact of strategic market participation and REC sales has helped the State utility improve its financial performance while maintaining reliable power supply, officials claimed.
