CBSE’s new evaluation method sparks anxiety among students

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

In light of the recent announcement regarding the introduction of on-screen marking (OSM) for class XII answer sheets beginning with the 2026 examinations, students who will give the upcoming board examination are experiencing increased anxiety levels. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) recently announced that class XII answer sheets will be assessed using OSM, a decision made public on February 9. This initiative aims to enhance evaluation accuracy, expedite the assessment process and increase transparency.

Additionally, to alleviate the stress related to board examinations, the CBSE has also set up a tele-helpline for psychological counselling. This helpline, which can be reached at 1800118004, commenced operations on January 6.

Designated CBSE counsellor and neuropsychologist Dr Sona Kaushal Gupta said that the helpline has been contacted by many individuals concerning their issues. She said that, on average, the helpline has been receiving about 10 to 12 calls daily. These calls come from both parents and students who are expressing concerns about the upcoming board examinations. Students have specifically raised issues regarding mathematics, mentioning silly mistakes and reported feeling a lack of sleep. Further, Gupta said that the recent announcement of screen marking has led to a 50 per cent increase in calls to the helpline, as students experience heightened anxiety about the new checking procedure, result marking and related aspects. Additionally, parents are also voicing their worries about this new marking system when they call the helpline.

She said that she ensures to counsel them effectively in order to help them manage their stress levels. She advised that students should concentrate on their studies during this period instead of fretting over the grading process or similar concerns, as that responsibility lies with their teachers. Further, she advised students to prioritise revision, practice with sample papers, get adequate sleep, maintain good health and more during this period as examinations are almost near. Additionally, she urged parents to refrain from comparing their children to others and to avoid discussing examination results with students concerned for the board examination.

Notably, the tele-helpline is available for both class X and class XII board examination students
