University served notice over mismanagement during cancelled fest

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun

Dehradun police sent a notice to the private university in Premnagar on Saturday and asked why the management did not inform students that the planned two-day Yuva Fest had been cancelled. A large crowd of students gathered at the university on Friday which created disorder on the road. During the incident, police used lathis on a student to clear the road for traffic. Following the matter, Dehradun senior superintendent of police Pramendra Dobal took action and reverted the policemen involved to the police line.

According to the police, officers had gone to clear the traffic jam caused by the crowd of students and improperly parked vehicles. When police asked students to move away from the road, one youth reportedly started arguing with the police. When police moved to catch him, he tried to run away. Police chased and caught him, after which he was beaten with lathis. The youth later became unconscious. A video of the incident went viral on social media, after which the SSP took cognisance of the matter. One inspector and one sub-inspector were reverted to the police line by Dobal.

A singer’s performance was also scheduled as part of the fest in the private university on Saturday. However, police had not granted permission for any large event at the institution for security reasons. Despite this, students had started gathering at the campus. Students said they did not receive any official information from the college that the fest had been cancelled. They said if they had been informed earlier, they would not have come. Questions are now being raised over the university management for not informing students in time when police permission for the fest had not been given.
