Schools closed today, police warn people to stay away from rivers

Consistent rain in Dehradun and a heavy rain alert for Dehradun has prompted the district administration to declare a holiday on July 10 in all government, government-aided and private schools from classes I to XII along with Anganwadi centres.

At the same time, Dehradun police have increased patrolling in vulnerable and flood-prone areas across the district. Police teams have been visiting riverbanks, streams and other such locations since Wednesday night. Police using loudhailers are warning people not to go near rivers and drains considering the rising water level in rivers and streams. People living in vulnerable areas along riverbanks are also being shifted to safer places as a precaution.

The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Pramendra Dobhal said that all police units have been placed on high alert following the weather alert. “The Uttarakhand Fire and Emergency Service, SDRF, Jal police and local police teams have been deployed and are closely monitoring the situation,” he said.

The police are also in touch with neighbouring districts. This coordination will help ensure that if river water levels rise suddenly, people living in vulnerable areas can be rescued in time and shifted to safer places, he added.
