Enforce conductors rule in stage carrier vehicles: City bus union

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Citing passenger safety and legal provisions, the Dehradun Mahanagar City Bus Service Society submitted a representation to the commissioner of the Garhwal Division. The request emphasised the need for conductors to be deployed in all stage carriage vehicles in accordance with a High Court order and the Motor Vehicles Act.

Chairman of the society Vijay Vardhan Dandariyal informed that compliance is being sought with the order issued by the High Court on May 23, 2025, which mandates the role and statutory requirement of conductors for collecting fares from passengers and for managing the entry and exit of passengers in stage carriage vehicles.

In this regard, a representation was submitted on Friday to the Garhwal divisional commissioner and RTA chairman, requesting that stage carriage operations adhere to the HC directives and the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. The representation stresses that where a conductor is legally required, appropriate action should be taken against any vehicle operating without one.

Dandriyal said that if a clear court order is not complied with, it may lead to the possibility of contempt of court proceedings. He requested the commissioner to issue necessary instructions after conducting an impartial investigation into the matter, ensuring complete and effective compliance with the HC order. This is essential for safeguarding passenger safety and ensuring that the stage carriage transport system operates in accordance with the law, he said.
