Once celebrated for its tranquillity, Dehradun is now seeing a rise in crime that has left long-time residents deeply unsettled. Rising crime in Dehradun is often tied to unverified tenants. Because many migrant workers and outsiders skip background checks, locals feel the police need to tighten verification for anyone moving here for work.
While agreeing with the residents’ concerns, the superintendent of police (City) Shekhar Suyal said that residents should complete verification of tenants and domestic workers for their own safety and for maintaining proper records. “We also conduct verification drives from time to time,” he added.
“I’ve lived in Dehradun since childhood, and I’ve never seen anything like this before,” a local female resident shared. She noted that rising crime rates have recently triggered widespread concern across the community.
Reflecting on Dehradun’s reputation as a quiet, green sanctuary, a student expressed concern over how recent events have generated a sense of fear among the public
Vineet Kumar, an elderly resident, said the police should take strict action against offenders and step up monitoring in residential areas.
Another resident noted that news of accidents and murders has become all too common in Dehradun.
A student suggested that police ramp up monitoring and background checks on outsiders, pointing to several recent cases involving individuals from out of town.
Doon police visit over 1,000 senior citizens
DEHRADUN: Amid deepening fear among residents with a crime spike, Dehradun police on Wednesday visited more than 1,000 senior citizens across the district to check on their safety and well-being. The police teams from different stations visited elderly residents living in both urban and rural areas. The teams asked the senior citizens about their problems and assured them of help whenever needed.
The police also gave the elderly the mobile numbers of police officers and personnel for quick assistance. They were told to contact the police immediately if they face any problem or feel unsafe.
During the meetings, police teams also spoke to the senior citizens about cybercrime. They advised them not to share personal, banking or other important information with strangers.
