In view of Holi, doctors recommend some basic care for pregnant women. “Some colours viewed as natural but their powder base could have harmful chemicals like lead and mercury which can get absorbed and cause pregnancy complications like premature birth or even a miscarriage. These colours can also adversely affect the nervous and reproductive system of expecting women,” said gynaecologist Dr Sujata Sanjay.
“Babies younger than six months should be kept away from colours considering their delicate skin. A red sandalwood tika would be enough to symbolically celebrate the festival,” she added.
Dr Sanjay said that lack of precautions could lead to complications like premature birth, loss of baby’s weight during birth and miscarriage. Pregnant women can play with herbal colours made from fruits and flowers. Stating that alcohol should not be consumed, she said that while
chemical-rich colours and adulterated sweets can be dangerous for anyone, pregnant women are advised to take special care as these items can prove to be harmful for both the pregnant woman and her unborn child. New breast-feeding mothers should also stay away from harmful colours with chemicals during Holi as such colours may reach the baby’s body through the milk and can have serious consequences.
