District hospitals should not become referral centres- Minister

The health minister Dhan Singh Rawat has said that the district hospitals and sub hospitals of the state would not be allowed to become referral centres. He said that facilities in these hospitals would be increased so that 90 per cent of the patients visiting them are treated there only. The minister was undertaking a meeting of senior officers of the state health department and the chief medical officers (CMO) of all the districts here on Sunday. He directed the CMOs to prepare a report on the health facilities in their districts within three days and submit it to the director general (DG) state health services.
The minister said that a special campaign to fill the vacant post of specialist doctors would be undertaken soon. This drive would be at the level of Directorate while the vacant posts of staff nurses, technicians, ward boys and sanitation workers would be filled on outsource by the districts. Elaborating his plan the minister said that in the first phase the government medical colleges and district hospitals would be made well equipped while in the second sub district hospital would be provided necessary facilities. In the third phase the Community Health Centres (CHC) and in fourth the Primary Health Centres (PHC) would be equipped, he said. In the meeting the minister directed that special focus on beautification and sanitation of government hospitals should be undertaken.
The meeting was attended by secretary health Radhika Jha, DG health services Dr Saroj Bhatt, director National Health Mission (NHM) Dr Saroj Naithani, CMOs of different districts and other officers of state health department.
