AI & Tech empowering the differently abled: Governor

Governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh said that artificial intelligence and technological innovations serve as bridges to new opportunities for people with disabilities, noting that technology is inherently non-discriminatory. He said this at the inauguration of the 30th Divya Kala Mela at Rangers Ground here on Sunday. The event will conclude on March 1.
Singh highlighted that the Divya Kala Mela is not just an event but a powerful platform for inspiration and enthusiasm, showcasing the critical role of Divyangjan (persons with disabilities) in making India the world’s third-largest economy. He said that the products created at the Mela should reach global markets, providing international recognition to talent. He asserted that, with determination and capability, Divyangjan can achieve excellence in any field.
Union minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, BL Verma stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 and various welfare schemes have established a strong foundation for integrating Divyangjan into the mainstream. He said that Rs 375 crore has been allocated in the current budget through the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India for the purchase and fitting of assistive devices, directly benefiting many individuals.
The Tehri MP Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah described the Divya Kala Mela as a catalyst for social transformation. Rajpur Road MLA Khajan Das referred to the Mela as a commendable initiative that offers dignity and opportunity to Divyangjan. Director of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) Pradeep A was also present on the occasion.
Notably, 29 Melas held across the country so far have seen participation from about 2,362 individuals, generating business worth over Rs 23 crore. The government has sanctioned loans exceeding Rs 20 crore to encourage Divyang entrepreneurs, reaffirming its commitment to economic empowerment.
The nine-day event in Dehradun features around 90 stalls, with participation from over 100 Divyang artisans, artists and entrepreneurs representing 16 States and Union Territories. A special job fair will be held on February 26, while the cultural programme Divya Kala Shakti will be held on March 1, showcasing the talent of Divyang artists.
