Aquaculture pioneer Shaji Baby John no more: Industry loses a visionary leader

The pioneer of aquaculture in India and the chairman and managing director of Kings Infra Ventures Limited (KIVL), Shaji Baby John passed away on Sunday. He was 66 years old.
Shaji Baby John was a towering leader, visionary entrepreneur and a pioneer who played a seminal role in shaping India’s seafood export and aquaculture sectors, earning respect both in India and internationally. A respected statesman of the industry, his contributions through his association with MPEDA and several other government bodies and industry institutions significantly influenced policy, infrastructure development and the global positioning of Indian seafood.
A contributor to The Pioneer, Dehradun, his columns were noted for his insight in the industry and his particular focus on developing India and facilitating the welfare of both those in the industry and the citizens, capitalising on the nutritional and other aspects of the seafood industry and blue economy.
Under his visionary stewardship, KIVL was transformed into a professionally managed corporate entity rooted in the values of integrity, innovation, sustainability and excellence. His foresight, discipline and unwavering commitment laid a strong foundation for long-term growth and enduring institutional strength.
Under his leadership, the company reached its highest market capitalisation of approximately Rs 580 crore, reflecting the confidence reposed by investors in his vision and governance. Beyond the company, he played an active role in global Malayalee and diaspora organisations. He served as chairman – Global Business Forum of the World Malayalee Council and also held senior leadership positions at GOPIO International, including as a member of its Global Executive Council. A respected thought leader, he was a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines and was frequently sought after by the media for his views and insights on the aquaculture and seafood industry.
Shaji endeared himself to everyone through his warmth, humility and pleasing personality. Hailing from a distinguished political and business family, he was the son of the late Baby John, former Kerala minister and senior leader in Kerala politics for decades. His life was a rare blend of leadership, kindness and quiet strength.
Beyond his corporate and industry achievements, he was a mentor and guiding force to many, admired for his humility, clarity of purpose and deep sense of responsibility towards the sector and society at large. His passing is an irreparable loss to the industry and to all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
He is survived by his mother Annamma Baby John, wife Rita S John, and two sons Baby John Shaji- currently joint managing director of Kings Infra and Peter John Shaji. His mortal remains will be kept for public homage at Vayalil House at Kollam on Tuesday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. His funeral will be held at Neendakara Church at 3:30 PM on the same day.
