Even as the political slugfest between the Bharatiya Janata Party and opposition parties continues over the Ankita Bhandari murder case, the BJP State president and Rajya Sabha member Mahendra Bhatt has submitted a police complaint stating that he had received a death threat on the phone. The person issuing the threat called Bhatt’s personal mobile phone from an unknown number and also verbally abused him, the leader has claimed. Acting on the complaint, the police have lodged a case in the Cantt police station and are investigating the matter, officials said.
The party’s State media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan informed that Bhatt submitted a complaint letter to the Dehradun senior superintendent of police on Sunday regarding the death threat issued to him. He has stated in the complaint that some person had phoned him during the day and consistently abused him verbally while also issuing a death threat. “During the conversation, I attempted many times to convince the person against using such language. Despite this, I continued receiving the abusive calls,” Bhatt stated. He further opined that the person is probably politically motivated. Considering the verbal abuse, it also seems as if the person is of an excitable nature, he added. “There can be a threat to my life and my political image. The abusive language being used by the caller was improper and untrue. This makes it appear as if some political rival could have instigated the person into making the call,” the BJP State president said while requesting the police to identify the caller and take necessary action.
Meanwhile, Chauhan said that the party will not tolerate a death threat being issued and abusive language being used with its State president. Such behaviour cannot be allowed in public and political life. It is hoped that the police would take stern legal action against the guilty person, he added.
