Preparations for the second phase of the census 2027 have been stepped up in Dehradun and other parts of the State. For the first time, the census exercise will be conducted digitally through an online portal, allowing households to submit their details themselves during the self-enumeration window. The information submitted online will subsequently be verified during the field exercise. From December 1, census personnel will visit households across urban and rural areas, including cantonment regions, to collect and verify the prescribed information.

The exercise will record household and personal details, including family and social status, parents, marital status, divorce and single-parent families. Information related to nationality and caste will also be collected according to the prescribed procedure. Preparations for the field exercise have been stepped up, with the officials and personnel being trained in the digital process. The training covers uploading information on the census portal, following prescribed procedures and handling issues that may arise during household-level enumeration.

The second phase will cover municipal and rural areas as well as cantonments across the State. Charge officers, assistant charge officers, technical assistants, data entry operators and other designated personnel will coordinate the exercise. Uttarakhand Census Director E.V. Ashish Srivastava said that census data provides an important foundation for planning and policy-making in the country. Dehradun district magistrate and Dehradun municipal commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey directed the officials to ensure accuracy while uploading information to the portal. Pandey said that the exercise would combine online self-enumeration with field-level verification to improve the accuracy of household data. He said that the digital system is aimed at making the census process more streamlined while retaining physical verification through the field exercise.
