Dairies continue to dump dung in drains despite MCD’s free collection service

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE / Dehradun
The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is providing a free cow dung collection service from dairy farms in the city, yet some continue to dump cow dung into drains. Over the past four days, the corporation has issued more than 11 challans and imposed fines worth Rs 88,000. Officials from MCD’s veterinary section have urged dairy operators to hand over the cow dung to the corporation’s trolley so that the city remains clean and drains do not get clogged.
The corporation started collecting cow dung from dairy farms in March. Initially, the service was launched on a trial basis covering 18 dairies. The number of dairies covered has now increased to 43, helping improve sanitation in the city.
However, many continue to dump dung in drains and open space. To tackle this, the MCD launched a drive under which various violators were penalised during the past four days.
Based on complaints, the corporation took action in Tapovan, Old Dalanwala, Gurudwara Road, Karanpur and Nathuwala areas.
Meanwhile, MCD officials said that the corporation has installed an automatic mechanised organic waste processing machine at the Gausadan in Shankarpur. About two trolley loads of cow dung are collected daily from the dairies and transported to this cattle shelter. The machines convert the cow dung into compost which is then used in various municipal parks.
Senior municipal veterinary officer Dr Varun Aggrawal said, “The MCD team is regularly collecting cow dung from dairies free of cost. We appeal to dairy operators to join this initiative and help keep the city clean. Strict action will be taken against anyone found dumping cow dung into drains,” he said.
