The Special Task Force (STF) has arrested a welder for allegedly creating a fake Instagram account in the name of Uttarakhand Police and uploading an AI-generated dancing video of the additional director general (ADG), Law and Order. The senior superintendent of police, STF, Ajai Singh said that the accused had committed the crime after failing to get recruited into the police force.

The accused was identified as Luqman Malik, a resident of Morowala in Clement Town. Singh said that Malik told investigators during questioning that he wanted to join the police but was unsuccessful in the recruitment process. “He then used artificial intelligence tools to create several images of himself in police uniform and also prepared a fake police identity card,” Singh informed.

He further said that no evidence has emerged so far to suggest that the forged identity card was used for any illegal purpose. “However, it is clear that Malik created and circulated the AI- generated video of the ADG with the intention of damaging the image of the police department,” he shared.

Notably, a case had been registered on June 20 at the cybercrime police station on the complaint of social media in-charge Bhawna Karnwal. Police examined digital evidence, including the Instagram account, mobile number, email ID and IP address, which eventually led them to the accused.

Singh said that they also got the controversial video removed from the fake Instagram account. “The mobile phone allegedly used in the offence has been seized and sent to a forensic laboratory for examination. Further legal action is underway,” he informed.
