Mahila Congress hits out at U’khand govt over surging crimes against women

The Uttarakhand Mahila Congress expressed serious concerns over the soaring crimes against women in Uttarakhand. While addressing the media on Wednesday, the president of the State Mahila Congress, Jyoti Rautela slammed the State government, stating that it had remained a silent spectator with the women being subjected to increased volume of crimes. “The State feels ashamed by the spiralling statistics of crimes being perpetrated against women. Under the BJP’s rule, there has been a huge surge in gang rapes, murders and heinous crimes against women across the State. An average of one rape or murder occurs each month here,” she said.
Rautela also highlighted the serious allegation against the former district president of the BJP’s Mahila Morcha, Anamika Sharma who is accused to have forced her boyfriend to repeatedly rape her minor daughter. “Police investigations revealed that these incidents occurred in several locations, including Haridwar, Agra and Vrindavan. Although Sharma was imprisoned we wonder whether she is receiving VIP treatment inside the jail,” she said.
She further tore into the BJP for its Uniform Civil Code boast, citing the case of a former party MLA Suresh Rathore who allegedly violated the UCC laws with impunity.
To further buttress her points, Rautela referred to a report from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), stating that Uttarakhand is unsafe for girls. “As per the NCRB’s 2022 report, 4,337 crimes against women were registered in Uttarakhand, including 867 cases of rape and 637 cases involving the rape of minor girls. Despite these alarming figures, the BJP government, the State Women’s Commission and the administration chose to look away. So the women and girl are scared with scant security for them,” she said, adding that the Congress’s women wing could not stay idle amidst these spiralling crimes and soaring apathy of the State government.
