The Dehradun district administration helped 26 poor and fatherless girls resume their studies under its welfare project Nanda-Sunanda. The district magistrate Savin Bansal distributed school and college fee cheques to the girls during the 12th edition of the project on Saturday. A total amount of Rs 6.93 lakh was transferred directly to the accounts of schools and colleges to help the girls continue their studies.
The beneficiaries included 10 girls from the primary level, eight from the secondary level and eight pursuing higher education. Many of these girls had to stop their education after the death of their fathers or due to poor financial conditions at home. With this support, their education has now restarted.
Bansal said that so far, education of 120 girls has been restarted under the Nanda–Sunanda project with financial help of around Rs one crore. The project aims to support helpless and economically weak girls so that they do not drop out of school or college, he said.
