Due to scant rainfall and snowfall this winter, dry climate is fanning forest fires in forest across Uttarkashi. With mercury surging up several notches above normal, the last few days have witnessed spread of wildfire. Thursday saw five in different areas of the forest division, affecting about 04.25 hectares of reserved and civil forest area. The blazes have not died down yet.
As per the district forest department, it is maintaining special surveillance in all sensitive areas. Department officials and field staff are conducting frequent patrols and, upon receiving reports of fires from any location, immediately rush to the scene, the department sources said, adding that they are coordinating and involving the locals in the fire-fighting exercises. They have been asked to exercise special caution and immediately report any fire to the nearest forest outpost or control station so that timely action could be taken.
The divisional forest officer, D P Baluni said that they are fully committed to conserving forest wealth with the cooperation of local people, village councils, voluntary groups and other departments.
“Forest fires not only damage forest resources but also seriously impact biodiversity, wildlife and environment. Furthermore, fires in hilly areas weaken soil stability, increasing the likelihood of rockfalls and landslides, which pose a threat to road users,” he said, adding that they are strengthening fire watcher and information system at the local level.
Meanwhile, 83 forest officers and personnel have been trained at a forest fire prevention training, workshop and mock drill held in Bhatwari block. Experts gave detailed information about quick response in case of forest fire, protection of forest wealth and safe management of injured persons. Mock exercises were also conducted on the spot to ensure better coordination in real conditions.
