Experts finds rise in cardiac cases among smokers during summers

The Meditrina Hospital, a heart centre operating under a public-private partnership at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital, has reported an increase in heart/cardiac issues among smokers, particularly during the summer season. This heart centre is located on the second floor of the district hospital premises.

The centre head, Chetan Pandey said that the outpatient department (OPD) for cardiac issues typically experiences a decline in patient visits during the summer compared to winter. He stated that in the winter months, the OPD sees around 1,200 cardiac patients per month, whereas in the summer, this number drops to approximately 1,000 to 1100. He said that this decrease is partly due to the thickening of blood in elderly patients during the winter, which contributes to an increase in cardiac issues.

Despite the overall reduction in patient traffic for heart patients during the summer, Pandey pointed out a concerning trend: an increase in heart/cardiac issues among younger smokers. He said that lifestyle changes have led to a rise in heart problems among the younger generation, with peer pressure leading many to start smoking as early as their 20s. These habits can result in health issues manifesting in their 30s. While older patients tend to visit the centre more frequently during the winter, it’s notable that younger individuals, especially smokers, are increasingly seeking help for cardiac issues in the summer months, he said.

Pandey added that initial symptoms of heart problems can include difficulty in breathing and issues while running. To help prevent these issues, he urged the younger generation to change their lifestyles and avoid smoking. Additionally, he recommended that everyone limit red meat and oily foods and consult a doctor immediately if they experience any concerning symptoms.
