Gandhi Park beautification project faces neglect

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) spent nearly Rs two crore on the renovation of Gandhi Park, but just months after its inauguration, the condition of the park has raised concerns among visitors. Spread across 58,952 square metres, the park underwent major renovation work beginning February 16 and was inaugurated on March 13 by the Dehradun mayor Saurabh Thapliyal.
Visitors have reported that maintenance has been largely ignored after the inauguration. Litter can be noticed scattered around the park despite the installation of dustbins. Damaged decorative lighting, broken structures and exposed electrical wires can also be seen at various locations. Visitor Varun Kumar said that the lack of maintenance is evident. “Dustbins have been installed, but the responsibility does not end there. Authorities should regularly inspect the park and ensure cleanliness. There should be dedicated staff to maintain the premises,” he said.
Safety concerns have also emerged due to the damaged lighting. Visitors alleged that some exposed wires remain unattended. Another visitor Bhaskar Bhandari highlighted the risk to children. He said that many young children come here in the evening to play. He asked who will be held responsible if a child accidentally touches an exposed wire and gets an electric shock. The park continues to attract children, senior citizens and families daily. Bhandri added that the MCD should carry out immediate repairs, improve cleanliness and conduct regular safety inspections to prevent any untoward incidents.
Speaking on the issue, chief municipal health officer Dr Anand Shukla stated that action will be taken against those found responsible for the wiring and cleaning work. He assured that the matter is being reviewed and necessary steps will be taken against the personnel concerned after a detailed review.
