The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Uttarakhand has expressed happiness at the State government’s decision to limit the homestay scheme to permanent residents of the State. This initiative aims to promote sustainable tourism and empower local communities.

On Thursday the cabinet in its meeting headed by chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had approved the proposal to amend the Uttarakhand Tourism, Travel Businesses, and Bed-and-Breakfast Regulation-2025.  The amendment ensures that economic benefits remain within the State while preserving its cultural integrity.

It is important to note that the CII Uttarakhand Tourism, Hospitality and Wellness Panel—composed of leading figures from the State’s tourism and hospitality sector—previously outlined several key recommendations aimed at enhancing the effectiveness, inclusiveness and sustainability of the homestay ecosystem. These recommendations focused on clarifying policies, supporting local hosts and ensuring sustainable growth in tourism offerings throughout the State.

Convenor of the CII Panel, Pranav Kukreti welcomed the State government’s decision, stating that it aligns with their recommendations. He believed this policy will help protect Uttarakhand’s cultural and ecological heritage, promote local participation in tourism and foster community-led growth. The Panel has expressed its gratitude to the State government and the Tourism department for their proactive engagement with industry stakeholders and for incorporating industry suggestions into policy.
