Residents of Lodada village in Uttarkashi district have decided to impose a penalty of Rs 51,000 along with socially boycotting any villager found serving liquor in marriage functions and other occasions. The villagers will not attend any function in which liquor is being served. These decisions were taken in a meeting of the villagers on Monday.

Gram Pradhan Kavita Butola said that it has become necessary to check the proclivity for liquor consumption in the village as it threatens family relations, the future of the youths and social unity. All the villagers agreed to the proposal passed with the support of the Mahila Mangal Dal and the Yuva Mangal Dal.

Butola said that the consumption of alcohol in marriage functions and social events in the past had resulted in altercations. Such incidents affect the peace in the village and social harmony. The villagers opined that consumption of alcohol is bad for health and also takes the youths on the wrong path.

It was decided in the meeting that the villagers will not attend any function in which the prohibition on serving alcohol is found to be violated. The villagers will also boycott the family organising such an event.
