The chief executive officer of Hong Kong-based global shipping company, Anglo-Eastern Univan Group- one of the largest employers of Indian seafarers- Capt Bjorn Hojgaard has written a book titled ‘Balance: Beyond Binary’ primarily to guide the maritime workforce and students who intend to become world class merchant navy officers.
‘Balance: Beyond Binary’ is a thought-provoking manual for 39,000 seafarers working across a fleet of over 700 ships for Anglo-Eastern Univan Group, including around 23,000 Indian seafarers. And, a sizable chunk of them are natives of Uttarakhand.
“For a rising Indian leader facing complexity for the first time in India’s maritime landscape, or a thoughtful young Indian citizen curious about what leadership in the country’s shipping sector looks like behind the curtain of a global maritime leader, my book acts as a guide and describes thoroughly that real leadership starts with self-awareness and ends with impact,” said Capt Hojgaard.
The chapters of ‘Balance: Beyond Binary’ book focus a lot on leadership skills since India’s maritime sector need many more entrepreneurs as Government of India’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat@2047’ aims to create 1.5 crore maritime jobs in the country by 2047 and is expected to open vast avenues for international collaboration, including a projection of $1 trillion worth investments in the country’s maritime sector.
India aims to become a leader in sustainable maritime development through skilling its young population, as it is one of the world’s youngest nations due to its large and youthful population, with over 65 per cent of its citizens under 35 years of age. The country’s median age is low and a significant portion of its population is under 18, contributing to a large demographic dividend. In such a scenario, ‘Balance: Beyond Binary’ book acts as a perfect study-book for Indian students keen on serving cargo and cruise ships as highly-skilled officers in various capacities.
