For the first time, the Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Trophy 2025, the inaugural international ice skating tournament hosted by India, will take place in Dehradun from August 20 to 23 at the Himadri Ice Rink. The Ice Skating Association of India (ISAI) shared this information during a Press conference here on Saturday.
The ISAI president Amitabh Sharma informed that the tournament will see participation from over 11 Asian countries including China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines. Competitors will race across nine distances, ranging from 222m sprints to 5000m relays, with categories spanning juniors to seniors. Over 195 skaters plus officials are expected to attend the event. Sanctioned by the International Skating Union (ISU) and organised by the Ice Skating Association of India (ISAI), this event marks a significant step for India’s presence in the global ice sports arena, he said.
“Winter sports in India are still in a nascent stage of growth, particularly ice sports. However, with the revival of this rink, it’s like our tryst with destiny,” said Amitabh Sharma. He said that they are working towards a future where India can host large events, such as the Junior World Cup by 2027. While it is our dream to host the 2036 Olympics, organising international events is a way to showcase our capabilities and hospitality to the world,” he added. He stated that top Indian skaters who represented the country at the Asian Winter Games in Harbin earlier this year— including Eklavya Jagal, Sohan Tarkar, Sai Sahana, Suyog Tapkir, Dashiel Concessao, and Noyal C. Cherian—will compete in this event.
During the Press conference, videos showcasing the event’s logo, mascot and team India’s preparations were also presented, along with personal wishes from IOA president PT Usha.
