Kumaon commissioner and secretary to the chief minister, Deepak Rawat took strict action against e-rickshaw drivers operating without functional lights during an inspection in Nainital on Friday. Five e-rickshaw drivers were also fined on the spot for violating basic traffic safety norms. During inspections in both Nainital and Haldwani, Rawat observed a large number of e-rickshaws running without headlights or proper indicators, posing a serious risk to public safety. He directed officials from the Revenue, Police and Transport departments to ensure that no e-rickshaw without a working light is allowed to operate on public roads. He also instructed them to carry out regular joint checking drives to prevent such violations in the future. The absence of lights on e-rickshaws is a significant safety concern, particularly in hilly areas like Nainital where narrow, curved roads and limited street lighting make night travel risky. Many tourists and local residents move around the town after sunset and vehicles without lights increase the chances of accidents and traffic disruptions.
Rawat emphasised that traffic safety cannot be compromised, especially in tourist destinations where the movement of pedestrians and vehicles is constant. Ensuring that e-rickshaws follow basic safety standards such as functional lights is essential for maintaining order on the roads and preventing avoidable mishaps. He directed officials to hold joint operations in coordination with local enforcement agencies to identify and penalise violators. He has urged e-rickshaw operators to comply with vehicle safety norms to avoid penalties and ensure safe transportation for both locals and tourists.
