Online shopping affects winter sales in Doon

The sale of woollens picks up during winter but traders here said that changing consumer preferences and the popularity of online shopping are reshaping market dynamics.
Shopkeepers in Paltan Bazaar said that despite good footfall, sales growth has remained steady rather than exceptional.
Shopkeeper Rohit Rathore said that the demand for woollen garments has increased. “People are purchasing winter clothes, but online shopping has affected sales. During cold weather, many prefer ordering online instead of visiting markets,” he said.
Another trader, Rajeev Kumar said footfall usually improves as temperatures fall, but younger customers often check products online before making purchases. “Many customers come after browsing designs on their phones. If they find the same product here, they buy it; otherwise, they place online orders,” he said, adding that overall business remains stable.
Shoppers said jackets and Kashmiri suits are among the most popular items this winter. Customers Mansi and Rohini said online platforms are preferred due to easy return and exchange policies. “In local markets, returning items can be difficult if there is a size or comfort issue,” they said.
However, some consumers still favour offline shopping. Ronit Chauhan said markets offer better options to physically check quality and variety before buying.
