The Vidhan Sabha Speaker and Kotdwar MLA, Ritu Khanduri Bhushan lashed out at the opposition parties for blocking the passage of the Nari Shakti Vandan Act in the Parliament. “The primary objective of this bill was to ensure that women—who represent half of the country’s population—receive their rightful political representation in the Parliament and the state Assemblies. But it was defeated due to the opposition’s obstinacy,” she said.
Expressing surprise over the opposition’s volte face, she said that the same parties had supported the bill in 2023. “Taking a U-turn, they now unitedly hindered the women from obtaining their rights. This is worrisome and unfortunate,” she noted.
