Focus on increasing medal counts in 39th National Games: Arya

Sports minister Rekha Arya directed officials concerned to focus on increasing Uttarakhand’s medal tally at the 39th National Games in the northeast compared to its performance in the 38th National Games. She said this while chairing a review meeting held on Tuesday.  

After the meeting, Arya said that she had instructed officials to develop a comprehensive action plan for the 39th National Games within 24 hours. This plan will include providing intensive training for athletes, coordinating with various sports associations and organising as many national championships across different sports in Uttarakhand leading up to the National Games.

She said that if Meghalaya and other northeast States lack infrastructure for sports such as cycling and shooting, Uttarakhand should consider providing these facilities to them. Preparations for the Sports University in Gaulapar, Haldwani were also reviewed in the meeting. Arya stated that a curriculum committee and a bylaws committee have been formed to initiate the academic session in July and she has instructed that the process of creating positions be expedited.

Regarding out-of-turn government jobs for athletes, the Sports department aims for most of these positions to be established within the department itself. Officials were directed to take swift action on this matter.

Additionally, Arya said that instructions have been given to amend the government orders related to the Mukhyamantri Udayman Khiladi Unnayan YojanaMukhyamantri Khiladi Protsahan Yojanaand the Contract Trainer Policy to achieve the actual goals of these initiatives more effectively.

The minister also informed that following instructions from the Central government, a draft for the “One District One Sport” policy has been prepared in Uttarakhand and its implementation will begin soon.
