MCD identifies land for 25 vending zones, 50 % area to be kept for parking to ease congestion

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has identified land for 25 vending zones in the city. The MCD board had earlier approved the development of 25 dedicated vending zones across the city, with 50 per cent of each zone’s total area to be reserved for parking.

The municipal commissioner Namami Bansal said that the decision was taken in response to increasing complaints of unregulated street vending and traffic congestion in busy market areas. Bansal said that the lack of designated vending spaces and adequate parking has contributed to road blockages and encroachments, particularly in high-footfall commercial pockets.

Under the approved plan, each vending zone will follow a structured layout model. Half of the total land area will be earmarked exclusively for parking to improve traffic flow and reduce roadside congestion. The remaining space will be allocated for licensed street vendors and hawkers.

She added that the identification of suitable land for all 25 zones has been completed. The corporation is now finalising Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), which will define the design, infrastructure requirements and implementation timeline.

The project aims to formalise street vending by providing organised and legally designated spaces, while ensuring smoother vehicular movement. The initiative is also expected to reduce unauthorised occupation of public roads and create a more regulated urban environment, she added.

Officials said that efforts are being made to implement the project at the earliest to balance vendor livelihoods with public convenience and traffic management within municipal limits.
