MCD launches cleanliness drive in Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has launched a cleanliness drive ahead of the monsoon season, focusing on clearing drainage channels and improving sanitation systems to prevent waterlogging.
Waterlogging during the rainy season remains a recurring problem in several parts of the capital, where clogged drains often cause roads to flood during heavy rainfall. The new campaign aims to address this issue through systematic drain desilting and improved waste management.
Under the initiative, the MCD has prioritised the cleaning of major drains across the city. A target has been set to clear three key drainage channels within four days as part of the initial phase of the 100-day campaign.
More than 50 municipal workers have been deployed to carry out continuous cleaning operations, including the removal of silt, plastic waste and debris that obstruct the natural flow of rainwater.
Assistant municipal commissioner Rajveer Chauhan said that the pre-monsoon drain maintenance is critical to reducing urban flooding. “Cleaning drains before the monsoon is essential to prevent waterlogging in the city,” adding that the civic body is also strengthening door-to-door waste collection, solid waste processing and public sanitation infrastructure.
He said that the campaign will include regular sanitation drives across residential and commercial areas. The corporation also plans to organise awareness programmes to encourage residents to participate in maintaining cleanliness and proper waste disposal.
The Swachh Survekshan, conducted annually by the Union government, evaluates cities across India on parameters such as waste management efficiency, sanitation coverage and citizen participation. The Municipal officials said that improving drainage systems and public sanitation will be key factors in Dehradun’s efforts to secure a stronger position in the 2026 rankings.
