MCD to set up biogas plants for cow dung management

PIONEEREDGE NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is planning to set up two new biogas plants to process cow dung generated in city dairies. Senior municipal veterinary officer Varun Aggarwal said that the corporation is working on a plan to install two plants for the treatment of waste from 127 registered dairies.

He said that the corporation is still working out the mechanism of how cow dung will be collected from dairies and transported to the plants for disposal. Improper disposal of cow dung has been a persistent issue in Dehradun. Many dairies dump waste into drains and water bodies, leading to blockages and water pollution. This matter has been raised repeatedly by councillors in board meetings of the corporation.

Aggarwal said that MCD is working to address such issues. He also stated that the corporation is also preparing to take action against unregistered dairies that are not complying with waste disposal rules. He also shared that as part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen waste management, the MCD inaugurated a fully automatic mechanised organic waste machine in Shankarpur on September 2. The machine converts cow dung into manure within 24 hours. With a capacity of one tonne, it will produce about 600 kilogrammes of manure every day. The manure will be used in municipal parks and green areas of the city, and some of it will also be sold. The machine was purchased at a cost of Rs 26 lakh under the National Clean Air Programme.

The corporation has proposed to procure 10 such machines to support its waste management system. He said that these initiatives are in the planning stage and are aimed at ensuring proper management of cow dung generated in dairies while preventing its impact on drains and water bodies.
