MLA & locals gherao police station, block highway after youth alleges police violence

Locals accusing the police of manhandling a youth in Badkot area of the district, staged a protest along with the Yamunotri MLA Sanjay Dobhal who headed a gherao of the Badkot police station and demonstrated on the Yamunotri highway on Friday.
Badkot municipal council chairman Vinod Dobhal and others participated in the protest seeking the removal of the Badkot police station officer.The locals said that the CCTV footage of the incident spread discontent among the public while the police are stating that the matter is being investigated.
The victim Sumit alleged that the police had beaten him up for no reason. The protest was suspended in the evening after the policemen involved were reverted to the line and action was assured against the accused officer by the district administration.
Earlier, the MLA said that he will not tolerate injustice with any citizen in the area, adding that the high handedness of the police will not be tolerated either. He demanded that the authorities should take immediate action against the police personnel found guilty in the incident.
The municipal council chairman said that Sumit was an influential person who had represented Uttarakhand in mountaineering and the police manhandling him is not acceptable. Meanwhile, the Badkot sub divisional magistrate Brijesh Tiwari and Uttarkashi police circle officer Janak Singh Panwar reached the protest site to attempt and pacify the demonstrators. They assured that appropriate action will be taken in the matter.
Uttarkashi superintendent of police Sarita Dobal said that the local police had received information about an altercation following an argument during a religious programme on Thursday. The police reached the site and got the youth concerned to undergo a medical test which confirmed the presence of alcohol. The matter is being investigated and required action will be taken on the basis of the investigation report, she added.
