Group captain Shubhanshu Shukla, a fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force and an astronaut for the ISRO Gaganyaan mission, emphasised that parents should encourage their children to study space science given the immense possibilities in this field. He said this during the fifth day of the Doon Book Festival held at Parade Ground on Wednesday. Former chief minister and Haridwar Lok Sabha MP, Trivendra Rawat, welcomed and honoured Shukla.
Speaking during the occasion, Shukla shared his experiences from his time in Dehradun and highlighted that India’s achievements in space are a result of the strength and confidence of 1.4 billion citizens. He presented a short film to school students, showcasing his space travel experience, which included a five-year training period, the journey from Earth to space, the time spent in space and his return to Earth. Through videos and photos, he provided insights into daily life during his 20-day journey in space, discussing aspects such as walking in the space station, special food habits and his work experience.
Responding to a student’s question during the event, he stated, “We all have a sea of possibilities before us. It’s possible that the next crew member on ISRO’s human mission will be from Dehradun; this possibility cannot be ruled out.” When students sought his advice on achieving their goals, he encouraged them to set big goals in life and break them down into smaller, manageable objectives.
Shukla urged the students to strive to improve their country, no matter which field they choose to pursue.
Former CM Rawat said that Shukla has given every citizen a moment of pride. He added that students from Dehradun would leave the programme inspired, with dreams and a determination to contribute to the country, much like Shukla.
Notably, the event commenced in Dehradun on April 4 and will conclude on April 14. The nine-day festival has been organised by the National Book Trust, India, under the Ministry of Education.
