DM warns of legal action against agencies failing to complete road repair works

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal has issued a warning to the Uttarakhand Urban Sector Development Agency (UUSDA) to complete pending road repairs in the Banjarawala area within three days or face legal action.

The directive came after the DM received complaints from residents about persistent waterlogging and damaged roads during the ongoing monsoon, as per sub-divisional magistrate Kumkum Joshi. She stated that as per the order, if the remaining roadwork in the area is not completed within the given time, an FIR will be registered against the agency concerned. Joshi also visited the site and conveyed the order to the officials on ground.

The SDM informed that Quick Response Teams (QRTs) set up under the district administration are actively resolving complaints related to waterlogging and sewer overflows in various parts of the city.

The teams respond immediately to calls received at the disaster control room and carry out field-level inspections and clean-up operations. She informed that the QRT also handled a sewer overflow issue near Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital. During the inspection, the team found an illegally connected pipeline that was diverting rainwater into the sewer chamber. This connection caused temporary waterlogging in the area.

The team closed the illegal line, removed waste materials including plastic bottles and construction debris and restored the system to working condition. Joshi said that similar complaints from areas like Lakshya Enclave and internal roads of Banjarawala are being addressed on priority. After the administration’s order, about 50 per cent of the internal roadwork has been completed in the area, while the main road has already been repaired, she said.

The SDM said that the DM has directed all construction agencies to finish their assigned tasks within the stipulated timeline. The agencies concerned will face legal consequences if ongoing projects interfere with public movement or access. Joshi said that the administration has formed separate QRTs for monsoon-related issues across urban areas, headed by city magistrate Pratyush Singh and SDMs, who have been inspecting waterlogged zones, identifying blockages and ensuring drainage systems are cleaned and functional.

The district magistrate has instructed officials to physically verify the status of drains and respond swiftly to any complaints raised by the public, the SDM added.
