The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has upgraded more than 900 LED streetlights to 120-watt capacity across key stretches of the city to improve visibility and road safety. The action was taken on directions issued by Dehradun mayor Saurabh Thapliyal and municipal commissioner Namami Bansal to strengthen street lighting infrastructure and address concerns related to poorly lit roads during night hours.

Bansal stated that the corporation’s Street Light division carried out a special drive under which existing 36W, 45W, 70W and 90W LED fixtures were replaced with higher-capacity 120W lights. She added that the objective is to ensure wider illumination spread, better luminance levels and uniform light distribution on high-traffic corridors.

The upgradation has been completed on several major routes, including Dilaram Chowk to the chief minister’s residence, Clock Tower to Rajpur Road, Clock Tower to Chakrata Road and Rispana to Mohkampur flyover. These stretches witness significant vehicular movement throughout the day and late into the night. According to municipal officials, improved lighting is expected to enhance driver visibility, reduce accident risks and support pedestrian safety. Bansal said that adequate illumination also helps law enforcement agencies in monitoring public spaces more effectively.

The corporation said that the teams are conducting inspections in other parts of the city to identify dark spots, malfunctioning fixtures and areas requiring additional lighting. Officials said that strengthening streetlight infrastructure remains part of the broader effort to upgrade urban services and improve basic civic amenities across Dehradun.
