Two die of suffocation from heater inside truck cabin

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Ramnagar

Two men died from suffocation after sleeping in a parked truck while using a Petromax heater to keep warm on a cold Saturday night in Ramnagar.

According to the Kotwali in-charge Sushil Kumar, a truck loaded with minor minerals had reached Ramnagar. The truck was occupied by its driver Irfan and helper Ikrar, both residents of Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh. The two were preparing to leave Ramnagar for Sambhal. Due to the severe cold on Saturday night, both men lit a Petromax heater inside the truck cabin and went to sleep. As the cabin windows were shut, gas emitted from the heater accumulated inside, leading to suffocation. In the morning, locals grew suspicious after noticing the truck parked at the same spot for a long time. When they peeped through the window, they saw both men lying unconscious inside and informed the police. Upon reaching the spot, the police broke the truck’s window, pulled both men out, and took them to the hospital where they were declared dead by doctors.

The police conducted inquest proceedings and sent both bodies for post-mortem examination. The police have appealed to the public to not use heaters or charcoal burners inside closed spaces during the winter season.
