Stating that unauthorised construction and encroachment by a resort allegedly diverted the river and caused loss of life and property in Maldevta area, the Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal ordered a high level probe on Thursday.
The officials informed that a large illegal resort built on the river in the area has been identified as the main cause of significant damage. The officials said that in Kishanpur Bandawali area in Maldevta, the river diversion caused by the resort construction reportedly washed away about 150 metres of road and damaged bridges and government property, resulting in losses exceeding Rs six crore.
After making multiple visits to the area and talking to experts concerned, Bansal ordered a high-level investigation and directed action against both responsible guardians and enforcers, as per the officials.
The DM also visited the affected areas, including Kesarwala, Maldevta, Bandawali and Kheriman Singh on Thursday to review ongoing relief and rescue operations. He encouraged the staff, forces and workers involved in the efforts.
Bansal instructed a thorough investigation of the illegal construction and approach to the river and directed the Public Works Department to repair roads and bridges on an urgent basis. The approach to Jhula Bridge in Kumalda had collapsed and the nearby playground was destroyed. The PWD restored the approach to resume traffic.
The DM ordered officials to ensure all work is completed soon so that people can commute safely.
