Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the stance of the opposition against the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is injustice to half of the nation’s population. Terming the history and intention of the Congress anti-women, he said that the people of the country will reply through votes to what the Congress and its INDI Alliance partners had done in the parliament. Creating hurdles in the way of women’s rights and terming it a victory shows the anti-women mentality of the opposition, he said.
Addressing the media at the Bharatiya Janata Party State headquarters here on Sunday, the CM said that three bills had been tabled for passing the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam to facilitate 33 per cent reservation for women in the parliament and Assemblies. However, the Congress and the entire opposition presented the biggest hurdle in the way of ensuring women’s rights. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attempted to give half the nation’s population their full rights so that women can play their role to the fullest and contribute to making India a developed nation. “The manner in which the Congress and other opposition parties celebrated when the bill did not pass in the parliament is very shameful. Creating hurdles in the way of according women their rights and then celebrating it as a victory shows the opposition’s anti-women mentality,” the CM said.
Dhami alleged that instead of playing a constructive role, the opposition accorded priority to political gains and kept its partisan mentality above the interests of the nation. These parties did not limit their opposition to parliamentary procedure as they have clearly signalled that they are not serious when it comes to women’s rights. He said, “The BJP believes that it is important for women to be part of the mainstream when it comes to policy making. The aim of the 131st Amendment Bill was clear- to provide the benefit of 33 per cent reservation to women at the earliest. This was an important and timely initiative especially for implementation from the 2029 general elections. An attempt was made through this bill to resolve the probable delay due to census and delimitation. The aim was to ensure that women do not have to wait unnecessarily for their rights. The Congress and its allies hampered this process with technical objections and procedural excuses. Through illogic and by spreading confusion, they attempted to give this important subject the form of a political dispute. The concerns raised by the opposition regarding delimitation are not based on facts. Delimitation is a constitutional obligation and is aimed at ensuring balanced and fair representation on the basis of population. There was provision for proportionate increase in the number of seats in all States under the proposed system. There would not have been any detrimental effect on any State, especially south Indian States,” he said. The BJP Mahila Morcha State president Ruchi Bhatt, Dehradun Cantt MLA Savita Kapoor and other party leaders were also present on the occasion.
