The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) concluded a six-day Swachhata and Environmental Awareness Campaign under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) covering upto 60 schools in different wards of the city.
Held from July 20 to 25, the campaign focused on cleanliness, waste segregation, environmental conservation, personal hygiene and sustainable waste management. It was conducted with the support of chief sanitation inspectors, sanitation inspectors, Swachh Bharat mission officials, municipal staff, school authorities and ward councillors.
The campaign began with Clean School Campus Day on July 20, when students took part in campus cleaning drives and took a cleanliness pledge. Waste Segregation Awareness Day was observed on July 21 through demonstrations on separating wet and dry waste and sessions on the Solid Waste Management Rules 2026. On July 22, Environment Protection Day featured tree plantation under the “One Student-One Plant” initiative and awareness programmes on environmental conservation and reducing the use of single-use plastic. Health and Hygiene Awareness Day was observed on July 23, with sessions on hand hygiene, safe drinking water and disease prevention. The following day, schools organised drawing, essay writing, poster making, slogan writing, speech and “Waste to Best” competitions to promote environmental awareness through creative activities. The campaign concluded on Saturday with cleanliness rallies, the Swachhata Pledge and recognition of active participants. The activities encouraged students to adopt responsible environmental practices and spread awareness about cleanliness in their homes and communities.
MCD officials claimed that the campaign strengthened coordination between civic officials, educational institutions, elected representatives and communities while encouraging students to become ambassadors of cleanliness. They said that the initiative also supported the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) by promoting civic responsibility, sanitation and sustainable waste management among the younger generation.
