Sanitation in the doldrums, MCD starts Health and Hygiene Awareness campaign in schools

Having failed to enforce existing laws to ensure even the basic level of sanitation in the provisional State capital, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is now conducting a Cleanliness and Environmental Awareness Campaign in the city. Various activities and public awareness programmes are purportedly being organised across the city till July 25 as part of the campaign. A “Health and Hygiene Awareness Day” was organised in some schools as part of the projection on Thursday.

MCD officials claimed that under the direction of Dehradun municipal commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey, chief sanitary inspectors (CSIs) and sanitary inspectors (SIs) conducted awareness activities in the schools in their wards. Students, teachers and school management actively participated in the programme and took part in activities focused on personal hygiene and health awareness.

During the programme, students were reportedly made aware of personal hygiene, proper hand-washing techniques through demonstrations, prevention of diarrhoea and mosquito-borne diseases and the importance of clean and safe drinking water. They were also encouraged to adopt healthy lifestyle practices, maintain cleanliness and spread awareness among their families and communities. The awareness programme was organised in 13 schools across Dehradun, officials claimed. 

The officials also averred that measures to prevent infections, maintain a clean environment and control water-borne and mosquito-related diseases were also spoken about. Through various activities, students pledged to contribute towards building a clean and healthy society. The officials said that several other activities and awareness programmes will continue in the coming days under the campaign to promote public participation and achieve the goal of a clean, healthy and green Dehradun, the MCD claimed.
