School bus fare hike:  Parents, lawyers vent anger

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Ramnagar

The recent decision by the State Transport Authority, Uttarakhand to revise fares for school buses and vans has triggered strong reaction from the people in Ramnagar. As per the new order, a transport fee of Rs 2200 has been fixed for distances ranging from 1 to 10 km, which parents and others have termed as a direct financial burden on their households.
Members of an organisation hit roads to protest against this decision. They, along with High Court advocates, resented the move strongly, calling it arbitrary and impractical.

A High Court advocate Puran Pandey stated that determining such fares without public consultation or discussions with parents goes against the principles of natural justice. Another advocate Manu Agrawal termed the decision a violation of the constitutional rights of parents, particularly the right to equality and fair treatment.

The legal forum has also announced that it will soon form a parents’ association to take up the matter more effectively. It plans to present the issue before the concerned authorities at both legal and administrative levels to ensure a fair resolution and to prevent unnecessary financial burden on the public.
