Several political parties organised a march on Monday to the Uttarakhand Police headquarters in support of the demand of a higher grade pay for police personnel. The parties, which participated included Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD), while Jan Adhikar Party convened it. Several social organisations also gathered outside Parade Ground before marching towards the PHQ.
They demanded the state government to immediately issue the order to implement the promised Rs 4,600 grade pay for police constables. According to the protesters, although the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had announced the grade pay earlier, the decision has not yet been implemented.
It is learnt that the protest march was organised on the call of advocate and convener Sandeep Chamoli. Speaking during the protest, Chamoli said that police personnel from the 2001–02 batch have completed more than 20 years of service and deserve the promised Rs 4,600 grade pay. “The government should fulfil its commitment at the earliest,” he added.
The protesters later tried to march towards the Secretariat, but police stopped them with barricades before they could reach. A brief argument broke out between the police and the protesters during the march, but the situation remained under control.
The protesters warned that if the government fails to act, they would step up the stir and it would continue until the demand is met.
