PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE / Dehradun
With thousands visiting Uttarakhand daily for the ongoing Char Dham Yatra, the Transport department started a special enforcement campaign on Yatra routes on Tuesday. The drive will continue till June 15. Additional nodal officer of the Char Dham Yatra, regional transport officer (Enforcement and Road Safety) Dehradun division, Anita Chamola informed that the Char Dham Yatra is currently at its peak, leading to a significant increase in the number of vehicles on the roads. This surge in traffic is raising concerns about overspeeding and rash driving, both of which heighten the risk of accidents. Additionally, there have been complaints regarding the operation of private vehicles being used for hire.
She said that during a visit to Haridwar, it was seen that at the Nepali Farm intersection, where traffic is controlled by signals, private buses clustered at the junction to pick up passengers are causing traffic jams. Moreover, it’s been observed that some vehicles are crossing over the temporary dividers constructed on the highway into oncoming traffic. The special campaign has been started to address these issues. Enforcement measures are being implemented to ensure road safety and take action against various offenses including overspeeding, drunken driving, rash driving and overloading. Enforcement teams have been deployed to carry out checks on the main travel routes, both in the morning and evening. The enforcement officers are being operated at several locations including Premnagar Ashram-Chandi Chowk-Nepali Farm Road, Nepali Farm-Bhaniawala-Jolly Grant-Ranipokhari and ISBT-Mohkampur-Lachhiwala toll plaza in Doiwala.
Chamola further informed that the enforcement teams are being directed to use speed radar guns to monitor and act against speeding vehicles and alcometres to check drivers under the influence of alcohol.
Additionally, enforcement officials in the division have been directed to conduct daily checking campaigns on the routes in their respective areas to address road safety-related violations. The ARTO (Enforcement) in Rishikesh has been directed to ensure the removal of buses parked illegally at the Nepali Farm intersection, she said.
Teams have been deployed on the Timli-Herbertpur-Katapatthar-Yamuna bridge route, along the Char Dham Yatra routes including Dehradun-Mussoorie-Yamuna Bridge-Damta, Chinyalisaur-Uttarkashi-Gangotri, Bhadrakali-Narendranagar-Chamba-Chinyalisaur and Rishikesh-Bhadrakali-Tapovan-Devprayag. The teams have been directed to conduct intensive checks for offenses related to road safety. Enforcement actions will be carried out using alcometres and speed radar guns allocated to each team. If any enforcement team is lacking the necessary equipment, the ARTO (Enforcement) concerned will ensure they receive it, she said.
Chamola also said that all enforcement teams are required to provide daily reports of actions taken in the prescribed format.
