Transport dept penalises 312 vehicles, 19 seized in special drive

Amid heavy traffic during the ongoing Char Dham Yatra, the Transport department has taken strong action against violators. A special interceptor enforcement drive was conducted across major routes in Dehradun and Haridwar districts, resulting in departing issuing Challan of 312 vehicles and seizure of 19 vehicles as of June 13, 2026. The drive began on June 9, 2026 and will continue until June 15, 2026. The campaign focuses on curbing significant traffic violations, including overspeeding, drunk driving, overloading, unauthorised commercial use of private vehicles and activities that obstruct traffic flow. 

According to officials, during the intensive checking operation, major violations detected included: 76 vehicles found overspeeding, 50 vehicles operating in the wrong lane or on the wrong side of the road, 36 vehicles without payment of applicable taxes, 16 vehicles without valid fitness certificates, 21 vehicles without valid permits and two private vehicles illegally carrying passengers for hire, which resulted in their seizure. 

Officials also stated that special interceptor teams have been deployed on key routes: Prem Nagar Ashram – Chandi Chowk – Nepali Farm Route, Nepali Farm – Bhaniyawala – Jolly Grant – Ranipokhari Route and ISBT – Mohkampur – Lachhiwala – Doiwala Route. These teams also conducted enforcement operations at ISBT Dehradun, Nepali Farm, Chandi Chowk Haridwar and surrounding areas against buses and other vehicles causing traffic congestion through unauthorised parking. Such vehicles were challaned and removed immediately to ensure smooth traffic flow and public convenience. 

“The safety of pilgrims, tourists,and the general public is our highest priority during the Char Dham Yatra and tourist season. Violations such as overspeeding, unauthorized operations, and disregard for traffic regulations significantly increase the risk of road accidents. The Transport department is committed to a zero-tolerance approach against such violations,” said regional transport officer (Enforcement and Road Safety) Anita Chamola.

She further added, “Modern interceptor vehicles equipped with advanced enforcement technology are continuously monitoring traffic movement across major routes.” 

Chamola informed that the special enforcement campaign will continue until June 15, 2026 and strict action will be taken against all violators to ensure safer roads and better traffic management.
