PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

A joint inspection was carried out by the Transport department team at the ISBT Shimla Bypass flyover site in Dehradun on Tuesday where a college student lost her life in a road traffic accident on Monday.

The site includes a dedicated lane for light vehicles headed towards Rishikesh and Haridwar, with a signboard already installed at the beginning of the lane on the flyover. The team will inform the district road safety committee again to install an additional signboard at the Shimla Bypass intersection, as recommended in the past, the regional transport officer (Enforcement) of Dehradun division Anita Chamola said.

She informed that the initial findings suggest that the likely cause of the accident was the scooty rider attempting to overtake a bus from the left side and the bus driver’s apparent delay in applying brakes. Chamola said that the department has planned a road safety seminar and workshop in the first week of August for all bus drivers and conductors operating on the Dehradun-Vikasnagar-Dakpathar route to make them aware of such a situation and ensure it does not occur again. The session will focus on increasing awareness about challenges arising from rising traffic, she said.

Besides this, transport authorities also conducted enforcement action at the Lansdowne Chowk area. The inspection team led by Chamola and ARTO (Enforcement) Pankaj Srivastava removed vehicles parked in an unregulated manner that were disrupting traffic.Vehicle owners and union representatives of city buses, TGMOs, Uttarkashi Union, stage carriage vehicles and Tempo Travellers were directed to use designated parking spaces. Drivers were warned that vehicles found parked at zebra crossings or road turns would be seized. Chamola informed that the department seized four vehicles found obstructing traffic during the operation. Recommendations were also made for action against the driving licenses of those responsible for parking violations.

She said that handcart operators selling fruits and vegetables along the roads were asked to shift to more appropriate locations and the municipal corporation was informed accordingly to look into the matter. The team seized an illegally operated private two-wheeler providing services through Rapido app at Asharodi and impounded an illegally running e-bus. The department will send a notice to Rapido for using private vehicles for commercial purposes without proper authorisation, she said. Besides this, the teams also issued challans to 12 vehicles parked improperly near ISBT, Chamola added.
