UJS assures uninterrupted service amidst water supply challenges in summer

The rise in water demand, coupled with a decrease in supply, presents significant challenges during the summer months. To effectively meet these challenges, the UJS is committed to ensuring uninterrupted water services for residents. UJS officials said this while addressing the increase in complaints and difficulties related to water supply during the summer.
They said that throughout the year, whether in summer, winter, or monsoon, the water supply faces various challenges. However, the demand for water rises considerably during the summer season. Officials highlighted that while the demand for water surges during this time, the sources that provide water often diminish, leading to an imbalance between supply and demand that complicates the situation. In addition to this, during the summer months, fluctuations in electricity voltage can occasionally disrupt the pumping systems in various pumping stations. These issues are significant obstacles that arise during the summer season, the officials said.
Officials further said that to effectively address and manage these challenges, the UJS takes proactive measures. They prepare stabilizers for the pumping stations to counteract voltage fluctuations. Further, tanker services are made available to residents when they encounter water supply issues. UJS operates 86 tankers of its own, in addition to 219 private tankers. Moreover, aside from the tanker services, a method known as “roasting” is implemented, which entails decreasing the scheduled supply period in a particular area during challenging circumstances.
The officials said that the water demand rises considerably during May and June, considering which the UJS refrains its approval for new construction sites from April through June. They urged the public to conserve water during the summer, suggesting that instead of washing cars with water, individuals should consider opting for dry washing methods. Additionally, they said that for gardening purposes, residents can visit STP outlets where treated water is available for collection. There are 43 STP facilities located across the State, with 13 situated in the Dehradun District.
Further, officials reported that from April to December 2025, there were 27,690 complaints regarding water shortages (not getting water). They emphasised that residents facing issues should reach out to the toll-free number that is 18001804100 and 1916, which is available 24/7 for assistance.
