Despite the announced schedule for students’ union elections at the State universities on September 27, uncertainty continues to hang over the election date at Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna (HNB) Garhwal University-affiliated colleges, including DAV PG College and DBS College, due to the absence of an official notification from the university. The tense students wonder whether the union elections would at all be held simultaneously with other colleges in the State. HNB Garhwal university is the only central university of the State.
The media in-charge and a professor at DAV PG College, Prashant Singh said that no notification has been issued from HNB University regarding the students’ union elections at the affiliated colleges till now. “As a result, preparations for the elections at DAV PG College have not yet begun. We, however, expect that the university will soon issue the notification to end the uncertainty,” he added.
The president of the student union at DAV PG College, Siddharth Aggarwal looked worried over the university not issuing the notification. “Our concern is justified, given last years’ experience. The government managed to evade the elections at the colleges. The same seems to be happening this year, too. The continued absence of a notification from HNB Garhwal University does not augur well for the democratic exercise at our college. In case the university does not issue the notification within 10 days, we may have to resort to a State-wide shutdown in the colleges,” he warned.
