Uniyal announces institution of Jim Corbett Award

To mark the 150th birth anniversary of Edward James Corbett, the State Forest minister Subodh Uniyal announced that a Jim Corbett Award would be presented every year to those who make remarkable contributions in the fields of forest conservation, wildlife protection and environmental sustainability. The announcement was made during a special programme organised by the Corbett Tiger Reserve in Ramnagar by way of celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of the legendary hunter, conservationist and writer.
Speaking at the event, Uniyal said that Jim Corbett had been revered as the ‘Gora Sadhu’ due to his dedication to protecting forests. “Now, the people of Uttarakhand must become Pahadi Sadhus and take active roles in conserving nature and the environment,” he added.
A play based on Corbett’s life was also presented on the occasion.
The principal chief conservator of forests, Sameer Sinha in his address remarked that to understand Corbett, one must read his writings and incorporate his values into daily life.
