The Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) will organise extensive State-wide campaigns across all districts from March 9 to March 13 to mark International Women’s Day. This initiative is part of the National Commission for Women’s campaign “Mahila Aayog Aapke Dwar.”
The chairperson of USCW, Kusum Kandwal stated, “Our commitment is to provide a safe and dignified environment for every woman in the State. Often, due to geographical constraints, women from rural areas are unable to reach the headquarters. Therefore, the commission is reaching out to them to ensure speedy justice. The commission’s aim is that no victimised woman should be deprived of mainstream justice.”
She further emphasised that the purpose of the public hearings is not only to receive new complaints but also to review the status of pending cases related to women in various government departments.
During the public hearings, the officials from concerned departments will be held accountable and efforts will be made to resolve long-pending cases on a priority basis. Pending cases will also be reviewed in coordination with key departments such as police, social welfare, health and revenue, she added.
Kandwal has encouraged all women in the State to participate fearlessly in these public hearings and present their issues and pending cases to the commission.
As per the details provided by the commission, the public hearings will begin on March 9, with the chairperson, vice- chairperson and members of the commission personally attending various districts to preside over the events.
Priority will be given to complaints regarding serious issues such as domestic violence, mental and physical abuse, dowry harassment or murder, property disputes, workplace harassment and human trafficking as well as the non-payment of maternity benefits. Officials from the district magistrate’s office, Police Administration and Legal Services Authority will also be present at each district’s public hearings to ensure immediate legal action on the cases.
