New telecom rule to fight SIM swap fraud from July 1

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun
New telecom security rules aimed at preventing SIM swap and call forwarding fraud will come into effect across India from July 1. Under the new system, mobile users will receive an instant SMS alert whenever call forwarding is activated or deactivated on their phone number. The move has been introduced to help users quickly detect any unauthorised activity linked to their mobile connection.
Importantly, cyber criminals often misuse call forwarding services to divert OTP calls, bank verification calls and other important security alerts to another number. This allows fraudsters to gain access to bank accounts, social media profiles and other sensitive accounts. The cyber officials said that the new alert system will help reduce cases of banking fraud and SIM swap scams.
The Cyber cell of Uttarakhand Police has advised citizens to regularly check their call forwarding settings and never share OTPs or SIM-related information with anyone. People have also been asked to immediately contact their telecom service provider if they receive suspicious alerts regarding call forwarding activity.
Citizens can report cyber fraud by calling the national helpline number 1930 or by visiting the government portal cybercrime.gov.in.
